OVERVIEW
Acute otitis media (AOM) refers to an infection of the middle ear.
WHAT MAKES US SUSPECT IT?
Risk Factors
Swimming, nursing with child laying down (reflux to ear), smoking, attending daycare
Initial Presentation:
- Fever
History Of Present Illness:
Tugging at the ear: commonly young children with a infection of the ear (such as AOM) may be seen tugging at the affected ear.
Physical Exam:
HEENT Exam:
- Bulging/erythematous tympanic membrane is a very common finding
- Pain with pneumatic insufflation
HOW DO WE TREAT IT?
Amoxicillin is typically the antibiotic of choice
Augmentin can also be used in certain circumstances
Ear tubes can be placed in patients who have re-current episodes of AOM.
