Medical Problems: Incontinence

OVERVIEW

This page is designed to organize content that is relevant to the topic of incontinence. This term is used often in medicine, and it is important that we become as familiar as possible with it.

WHAT EXACTLY IS IT?

Before going any farther, let us make sure we clearly define the “medical problem”. Incontinence refers to ANY involuntary loss of urine or bowel contents. Because it is such a general term we must further subcategorize it for the sake of being organized.

Urinary incontinence: this refers specifically to the involuntary loss of urine. Given the physiological and anatomical difference between males and females, we will further subcategorize this topic by sex.

Fecal incontinence: this refers specifically to the involuntary loss of bowel contents. Given the physiological and anatomical difference between males and females, we will further subcategorize this topic by sex.

  • Fecal incontinence in females
