OVERVIEW
This page is dedicated to compiling Step 1 study notes for the topic of inflammatory mediators. This page is likely disorganized as it was made in haste.
IL-1
Some facts to keep in mind:
- Causes fever
- Activates endothelium to express adhesion molecules
- Induces chemokine secretion to recruit WBCs
- Activates osteoclasts (important for osteoporosis)
IL-2
Some facts to keep in mind:
- Stimulates T cells
- Stimulates growth of helper, cytotoxic, and regulatory T cells, and NK cells
- Granuloma formation
IL-3
Some facts to keep in mind:
- Produced by T-cells
- Stimulates the growth and differentiation of stem cells in the bone marrow
IL-6
Some facts to keep in mind:
- Closely associated with severity of temporal arteritis
IL-8
Some facts to keep in mind:
- Mediates the accumulation of pus (by recruiting AND activating neutrophils)
- Induces phagocytosis in neutrophils once they arrive
IL-10
Some facts to keep in mind:
- Anti-inflammatory cytokine
- Produced by macrophages and TH2 cells.
- Limits the production of: IL-2, IL-3, and TNF-alpha
C3b
Some facts to keep in mind:
- Opsonization
C5a
Some facts to keep in mind:
- Chemoattractant: will recruit other immune cells to the area.
