OVERVIEW
This page will cover the modified Rankin scale which is used to measure the degree of neurological disability from prior stroke in a patient that is being considered for/worked up for a radiology procedure.
WHAT IS IT EXACTLY?
The modified Rankin scale is a from 0 to 6 that is used to demonstrate the degree of disability caused by a prior stroke. The scale is shown below:
HOW IS IT USED?
This scale can be used to identify patients who may benefit from certain interventions such as an embolectomy for a large vessel occlusion causing a new stroke. Often times recommendations may suggest that the benefit of intervention is highest in patients with no significant pre stroke disability (baseline modified Rankin scale ≤ 1)
