Cyclobenzaprine

WHAT IS IT?

Cyclobenzaprine (Flexeril) is a centrally acting skeletal muscle relaxant (unclear mechanism of action). It is structurally and pharmacologically related to TCA antidepressants.

WHEN DO WE USE IT?

Muscle spasms: this is due to its activity as a muscle relaxant

Muscle discomfort post hernia repair: the placement of mesh for hernia repair may irritate the surrounding muscles. This medication can be used to help address this discomfort.

WHEN DO WE AVOID USING IT?

Concomitant/recent usage of MAOI medications: given its similarity to TCA medications, this drug should not be used with MAOIs due to the risk of serotonin syndrome.

Acute recovery phase of MI: muscle relaxers like this one are contraindicated
