WHAT IS IT?
Cyclobenzaprine (Flexeril) is a centrally acting skeletal muscle relaxant (unclear mechanism of action). It is structurally and pharmacologically related to TCA antidepressants.
WHEN DO WE USE IT?
Muscle spasms: this is due to its activity as a muscle relaxant
Muscle discomfort post hernia repair: the placement of mesh for hernia repair may irritate the surrounding muscles. This medication can be used to help address this discomfort.
WHEN DO WE AVOID USING IT?
Concomitant/recent usage of MAOI medications: given its similarity to TCA medications, this drug should not be used with MAOIs due to the risk of serotonin syndrome.
Acute recovery phase of MI: muscle relaxers like this one are contraindicated
HOW IS IT ADMINISTERED?
Administered orally
WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS/TOXICITY?
Anticholinergic effects: such as dry mouth, urinary retention.
